The cup
about the coffee
The Ethiopia Gera is a superb representation of this season's phenomenal quality. This lot has notes of tropical, honey, floral, with clear, composed acidity and complex fruited sweetness.
Gera comes from the larger Jimma region, one of Ethiopia's largest producing regions. Producers here live close to the washing station, making transport relatively easy. Standard practice in Gera includes intercropping coffee with native shade trees such as banana, which help fertilize the soil. Since producers deliver their coffee in cherry form, the collection centers prepare organic compost from this waste, store it, and distribute it to the producers.
Unlike many other parts of the country, Agaro has not seen a large shift from coffee to khat or eucalyptus. These alternative crops harm the environment by drawing excessive water from the soil. In contrast, coffee is economically viable and ecologically supportive, thriving best within a healthy forest ecosystem.
