Three bags in 2010.
Sixteen years later, we're still going back.
Every year, Backporch travels to Hacienda La Minita in Costa Rica's Central Valley. Sixteen years in, it's less a supply chain than a friendship. Origins follows founder Dave Beach, his daughter Scout on her first trip, and our café managers through three days on the farm: the nursery, the mills, the cupping table and the harvest.
It's a film about what direct trade means for everyone it touches, from the people who pick the cherries to the barista who hands you your cup in Bend.
What to expect
Taste the farm
Sample La Minita coffee, the same lots you'll watch being picked and processed on screen.
Live Q&A
Stick around after each showing to ask Dave and the crew about the trip, the farm and the relationship behind it.
Farm photography
Prints from the trip hang in the café for the night: the people, the hillsides and the mill.
The people behind the cup
"IT'S MORE THAN FAIR TRADE. IT'S A HANDSHAKE. IT'S THIS RELATIONSHIP."
Save the date
Both showings are free, with no RSVP needed. Pick the one that works for you, add it to your calendar, and come early for a good seat.
Free and open to everyone. No tickets or sign-up.
Bring Costa Rica home
Our current Costa Rica washed comes straight from Hacienda La Minita, the farm in the film. You can try it for yourself: we'll be pouring it at the screening, and bags are in the café and online.
Good to know
Does it cost anything?
No. Both showings and the coffee samples are free.
How long is it?
The film runs about ten minutes, then the Q&A. Plan on about 40 minutes per showing.
Can I bring my kids?
Yes. Origins is for all ages, so bring the whole family.
Where do I park?
Use general downtown Bend parking: street spots and the nearby downtown parking garages. First Friday gets busy, so give yourself a few extra minutes.
Can't make it?
